Active Instructional Strategies

Many faculty struggle with the application and implementation of active teaching strategies. Literature supports the need to change from traditional teaching methods to one that will actively engage the learner. There is a lack of knowledge related to the implementation of active strategies in the classroom, clinical, simulation, and skills lab setting.

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to identify ways to implement active strategies in their classroom, clinical, simulation, and skills lab settings. This will be a hands on workshop where the learner will leave with at least one lesson plan or planned activity to implement into their current course.

Elisabeth Turingan, MSN/MHA, DNP-c, RN

Elisabeth Turingan, MSN/MHA, is a nurse educator for Integration Services at ATI Nursing Education. Elisabeth holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing and Health Administration. She currently is finishing her Doctor of nursing Practice, at Grand Canyon University and will graduate April 2017. She has held faculty positions that provide her with knowledge in traditional Associate Degree Nursing programs in the Public and private sector. During which time she served on the Western California Associate Colleges (WASC) committee for the nursing program. Elisabeth was able to focus on providing evidence to support Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s), Program Learning Outcomes (PLO’s), and Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO’s) through the Curriculum. Since Joining ATI in 2012, Elisabeth has worked with nursing programs across the United States, assisting them with maximizing their use of the ATI supplemental resources. Elisabeth has presented workshops on the ATI Academy to promote Active Teaching strategies.

Sierra E. Brady, MSN, CNS-Nursing Ed, RN, PHN

Sierra Brady, MSN, CNS-Nursing Ed, RN, PHN, College Campus Chair/Director – School of Nursing, University of Phoenix, Fresno Sierra Brady holds a Master of Science in Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Educator from California State University, Fresno. Currently, Sierra serves as the College Campus Chair / Director for the School of Nursing at University of Phoenix, Fresno managing the BSN, MSN, Concurrent Enrollment and soon to open FNP programs. Sierra started her career in nursing as a nurse extern on the medical surgical floor at Community Regional Medical Center. Subsequently, she became a registered nurse in the emergency department at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fresno. Sierra moved into the Professional Practice Specialist role at the Veterans Administration Hospital working closely with Regional Quality Management office and Washington representatives conducting risk management tasks for the hospital. While working at the VA Hospital, Sierra held a clinical instructor for nursing students on the telemetry and ICU floors at both Community Regional Medical Center and St. Agnes Hospital through Fresno State University. The past six years Sierra held a lead faculty position building and presenting curriculum at a traditional Associate Degree nursing program at San Joaquin Valley College with focus on Medical Surgical and Gerontology.
