Redefining and Redesigning Clinical Education: A New Approach to Clinical Education

Recent innovations in clinical education have created new opportunities to develop clinical learning activities informed by learning theory and educational research. Simulation has been studied extensively and recent studies suggest it can replace some of the time focused on patient care in traditional clinical education. Other approaches such as Concept-Based Learning Activities (CBLA) have also been shown to facilitate the development of clinical reasoning and judgment. The importance of Deliberate Practice emerged as an important theoretical model to inform skill development. This presentation provides a theoretical model to use when designing a clinical education curriculum and describes 5 kinds of clinical education activities to use when designing pre-licensure curriculum.

Paula Gubrud, EdD, RN, FAAN

Paula Gubrud EdD, RN, FAAN earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Walla Walla University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Oregon Health and Science University (OSHU) and an EdD from Portland State University. She is a founding leader of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE) and currently serves as co-director of this nationally recognized collaboration. Dr. Gubrud has over 20 years of experience in community college education. She served as nursing faculty, nursing program director, dean of Nursing & Allied Health, and special assistant to the president for strategic initiatives at Mt. Hood Community College. She also served on several statewide committees through the office of Oregon’s Board of Education Community College and Workforce Development Department. Dr. Gubrud directed the OCNE Clinical Education Redesign project and facilitated the development of a new framework used to design innovative clinical education activities and curricula. Dr. Gubrud is currently an associate professor and special assistant to the dean at the OHSU School of Nursing. She teaches in the RN to Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program and in the Masters in Nursing Education Program, and serves on several dissertation committees. Dr. Gubrud consults on the development of community college and university consortiums and on the creation of shared competency-based curricula. She frequently leads national workshops on clinical education redesign and simulation. She is the author of a popular medical-surgical textbook, several book chapters and an array of journal articles.
