See It, Hear It, Feel It: Virtual Reality Immersive Learning
Virtual reality (VR) is a high-impact emerging learning experience that is rapidly growing. To engage nursing students in this type of learning in tandem with curriculum, VR offers a unique approach for immersive learning. Participants will be provided an overview of the various types of virtual reality (augmented, immersive, and mixed) and introduced to examples for use in nursing education. Data from a pilot study on the use of immersive VR conducted in an undergraduate nursing program will be presented. (The findings from two different cohorts of students revealed an impact in greater understanding, empathy, and confidence level.) Integration considerations and challenges, along with strategies for securing support, will be discussed when exploring potential use of VR in nursing education.
Following this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe types of virtual reality, providing examples of current use in nursing education
- Review findings of student response to immersive reality experiences in undergraduate nursing education
- Identify strategies and challenges with the integration of virtual reality experiences.
