Moulage Magic on a Shoestring

This hands-on workshop will review moulage techniques to enhance realism and invite participants to suspend disbelief for simulation-based learning experiences. Strategies to enhance fidelity for both manikin-based and simulated/standardized patients will be provided. Attendees are invited to practice creating realistic moulage using readily available and inexpensive supplies. This session will involve working with materials that may transfer or cause staining; participants should dress accordingly or bring smocks. (A limited number of ponchos may be available.)

Session Objectives
Following this session, participants will be able to:

  • Determine the level of fidelity/realism needed for simulation-based learning experiences
  • Identify readily available resources to create realism using moulage techniques
  • Discuss participant, environmental, and practical considerations when selecting and utilizing moulage effects
  • Practice applying moulage techniques learned during this hands-on workshop.


Charlene Romer

Charlene Romer, PhD, RN, CNE, has more than 20 years of experience as an educator with 15 years in virtual instruction. She holds a PhD in Nursing along with diploma, bachelor, and master degrees. Over the last several years, she has been actively involved in the curriculum development and student-learning outcomes that support program outcomes. Dr. Romer has been in the design/redesign of courses for virtual delivery and the transition of course materials to a virtual and/or blended format, as well as the integration of eLearning tools, such as Adobe Captivate, Second Life, and Wimba. Dr. Romer has experience in virtual-course layout/design and in the loading of course material onto Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Blackboard and eCollege. Dr. Romer has served as chair of curriculum committees, participated in the conversion of a diploma program to a baccalaureate degree granting, single-purpose institution, the development of a virtual master’s program, and an accelerated bachelor’s degree program for second degree students. In her current role as curriculum consultant at ATI, Dr. Romer shares her expertise with educators across the country. She has developed active-instructional strategies that are aimed at improving students’ clinical reasoning and clinical judgment skills. She has assisted programs in developing or revising their curriculum to incorporate current initiatives, such as the BSN essentials, QSEN and NLN competencies.

Christine Heid

Christine Heid, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE, is a Nursing Education Consultant at ATI Nursing Education. Dr. Heid earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio, and holds a Master of Science in Nursing and Healthcare Education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She is a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), and fellow of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation Learning (INACSL) and CAE Healthcare Simulation Fellowship. Her recent service includes membership in the QSEN Academic Clinical Practice Taskforce, advisory committee member on the ANA Workplace Violence and Incivility Professional Issues Panel, chairperson of the Ohio Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OOADN), and president of Rho Nu at-large chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). Her work on fostering deep learning through online post-conference learning has been published in the peer-reviewed journal “Teaching and Learning in Nursing.” Dr. Heid received an Honorable Mention for her poster “Doing Clinical Differently: Development of a Clinical Teaching and Learning Tool” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2018 Baccalaureate Education Conference in New Orleans. Dr. Heid brings diverse experience in nursing practice from small community hospitals to large metropolitan centers and across nursing education from practical nursing to the doctor of nursing practice. She is passionate about nursing education and welcomes the opportunity to share ideas, promote active learning strategies, and nurture “out of the box” thinking to enhance student and faculty success.
