How to Make Virtual Reality a ‘Reality’ in Nursing Education

Interested in including virtual experiences as a learning strategy with your nursing students? Or are unsure of the process for including virtual experiences utilized in nursing education? This session if for you! In this session we will explore and demonstrate different virtual reality experiences used in nursing education. Then the process for including virtual experiences will be critically examined and participants will experience a virtual environment. Participants will leave with an increased understanding of the types of virtual experiences available, links to free resources and ways to optimize learning when using these technologies.

  • Differentiate between different formats of virtual experiences
  • Explore how virtual environments are being used to prepare students for clinical and other experiences.
  • Examine the process for including virtual experiences in education and training


Michelle Aebersold, PhD, RN, CHSE, FAAN

Michelle Aebersold PhD, RN, CHSE, FAAN is a Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing in the Department of Systems, Population and Leadership. She is an assistant editor at Clinical Simulation in Nursing and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Information. As part of a team, she has received grant funding from the National Cancer Institute to use simulation to improve the safe delivery of chemotherapy by nurses and pharmacist. She is also working on using immersive virtual reality and augmented reality to determine how those methods can be integrated into the practice environment in adult and pediatric emergency environments. She has published in the area of virtual reality and integrating simulation into the curriculum. She is well published, presents her work nationally and internationally and loves to mentor others in the field.

Margaret Verkuyl, NP-PHC, MN

Margaret Verkuyl, NP PHC, MN is a Professor (Nursing) at Centennial College and an adjunct lecturer at the University of Toronto. She is a leader in developing and researching virtual simulations. These simulations won eight prestigious local, national and international awards. While gaining international attention, the VGS are pervasive in nursing education throughout North America. Most recently, she developed an open access Virtual Healthcare Experience with 6 different virtual gaming simulations. She has published over 15 articles related to virtual simulation in peer-reviewed journals and has authored a book chapter on topic of virtual simulations. Her work is disseminated at national and international conferences.
