Extended Reality (XR) and Virtual Immersion in Nursing Education

The presentation explores the integration of high-impact practices using extended reality, focusing on immersive virtual reality and mixed reality learning opportunities in nursing education, inclusive of the transition online during 2020. The presentation covers the benefits, strategies and challenges with integration of extended reality modalities, and offers an opportunity for attendees to experience immersive virtual reality as a user.

Colleen Nevins, DNP, RN, CNE

Colleen Nevins, DNP, RN, CNE has been at Channel Islands University Channel Islands since 2009 as the Simulation Lab Instructor from 2009 – 2014 and as Associate Professor from 2014 to present. She has been involved in simulation through integration of varied levels of fidelity, computerized simulation, and extended reality methodology, in addition to chairing the program’s Simulation Taskforce. Colleen’s teaching focus has been primarily medical-surgical nursing and leadership courses. Colleen has also taught in other vocational and baccalaureate nursing programs. Her practice experience includes ED, home care, ICU, neurology, GYN post – surgery, and 16 years of management. Colleen obtained her BSN from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire; a Masters in Nursing from UCLA; and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Western University of Health Sciences. Jaime Hannans, PhD, RN, CNE

Jaime Hannans PhD, RN, CNE is Associate Professor of Nursing at California State University Channel Islands and acts as the California State University Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) Campus Co-Coordinator working on textbook affordability. Dr. Hannans obtained her BSN and MSN from California State University, Chico, and PhD from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Hannans has received numerous awards including the California State University Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award 2018 and the AACN Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award 2019. Her research interests are most recently focused on immersive virtual reality experiences, reflective learning, simulation, online and blended learning best practices, and the use of technology and open educational resources in higher education.
