Evidence to Guide your Clinical Evaluation
This presentation examines clinical evaluation in nursing and challenges in observing students’ performance and making decisions about competence. The session includes discussion about the tool used for clinical evaluation, typical competencies on clinical evaluation tools, rating scales, and preparing clinical educators for using the tool. Other strategies for assessing students’ learning such as written assignments and post clinical conferences are examined. A summary of the research and other evidence related to clinical evaluation in nursing is integrated throughout the presentation. By understanding the evidence and recognizing gaps in our knowledge about clinical evaluation, nurse educators can make informed decisions about how they assess students’ learning and performance in the clinical setting.
