Enhancing Clinical Judgement and the Application of the Social Determinants of Health Through Storytelling

Storytelling engages the learner, creates lasting memories of the lecture content, makes learning more accessible, and improves the relationship between instructors and learners. In addition, storytelling can be a vehicle for helping nursing students understand how the social drivers of health impact health and build empathy. In this presentation, we will review the history of narrative pedagogy and storytelling, describe the differences and benefits of storytelling vs. case studies, and share a format for building well-structured clinical stories that create a learning experience that integrates the social drivers of health, Tanner’s Clinical Judgement Model and the NCSBN Clinical Judgement Measurement Model.
