Doing Clinical Differently: Development of a Teaching and Learning Tool

Clinical teaching and learning were reimagined using an innovative tool with built-in instructional strategies that provide guidance to faculty and clarity for students. Designed to foster clinical judgment through an intentional process, faculty facilitate deeper discussions and reflective thinking while students offer peer feedback within patient care environments. This session shares strategies for integration of this tool into clinical teaching and learning in face to face and online clinical experiences.

Christine Lynn Heid, PhD, MSN/Ed, RN, CNE, CHSE

Dr. Christine Heid, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE is a Nursing Education Consultant at ATI Nursing Education. Dr. Heid earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio and holds a Master of Science in Nursing and Healthcare Education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She is a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), and fellow of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation Learning (INACSL) and CAE Healthcare Simulation 2017 Washington D.C. Cohort. Her current service activities include volunteer on the INACSL Social Media Commitee, QSEN Academic Clinical Practice Taskforce, American Red Cross, and Membership Ambassador for Rho Nu at-Large chapter of Sigma. Her work on fostering deep learning through online post-conference learning has been published in the peer-reviewed journal “Teaching and Learning in Nursing”. Dr. Heid and her colleague Dr. Crum received an Honorable Mention for their poster “Doing Clinical Differently: Development of a Clinical Teaching and Learning Tool” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2018 Baccalaureate Education Conference in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Heid brings diverse experience in nursing practice from small community hospitals to large metropolitan centers and across nursing education from practical nursing to the doctor of nursing practice. She is passionate about nursing education and welcomes the opportunity to share ideas, promote active learning strategies, and nurture ‘out of the box’ thinking to enhance student and faculty success.

Tracy A. Crum, DNP, APRN, NP-C

Dr. Tracy Crum is an Assistant Professor in the Dwight Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Ashland University. Her Doctor of Nursing Practice project was titled “Motivational Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience in Hospitalized Patients with Chronic Disease: A Practice Improvement Project to Increase Awareness and Determine the Need for Intervention”. She is licensed as a Family Nurse Practitioner developing her practice in a variety of settings. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate nursing program at Ashland University. Dr. Crum and her colleague Dr. Heid received an Honorable Mention at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2018 Baccalaureate Education Conference for their poster titled “Doing Clinical Differently: Development of a Tool for Clinical Teaching and Learning.” She holds kindness, spirituality, and connectivity as high priorities in her personal and professional work. She is passionate about impacting the learning process and the development of critical thinking through experiential learning and as a “guide on the side.”
