Incivility in the Online Environment

This presentation will discuss the increasing frequency of online incivility in online courses as well as how it manifests. The correlation between online incivility in courses and the rise of social media will be noted. Other root factors underlying online incivility will be explored, including social isolation and lack of connectiveness. Ties to theories that help to understand online incivility will be provided, including social learning theory and deindividualization. Strategies regarding the promotion of civility in online courses will be discussed. These begin with a review of university and school policies and proceed to online course development, setting the tone at the beginning of the semester, use of assignments, staying connected and role modeling.
