Development of a Pediatric Simulation Using Peer Mentoring Between Junior and Senior Undergraduate and Advanced Practice Nursing Students

The process of developing an intraprofessional pediatric simulation in pre-licensure bachelor’s (BSN) and advanced practice (APN) nursing students will be presented. The purpose of the pediatric simulation project was to utilize peer-mentoring to foster self-efficacy with junior and senior level BSN and APN students. The experience consisted of four high fidelity simulation experiences, senior led skills practice incorporating the Assessment Technology Institute, LLC © (ATI) Skills modules, and senior led clinical reasoning with ATI Real Life Scenarios. The high fidelity simulations included peer evaluation with the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument © (CCEI). The APN student led two post-simulation debriefings. Peer learning strategies and expected outcomes in the intraprofessional pediatric simulation will be discussed.

This innovative and dynamic project was developed by a team including: Maribeth Hercinger, PhD, RN; Amanda Kirkpatrick, MSN, RN-BC; Sarah Ball, MSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, Sara Banzhaf, MSN, APRN; Susan Connelly, DNP, APRN; Jacquie Hanks, MSN, APRN; Meghan Potthoff, PhD, APRN, & Kandi McCafferty, PhD, RN Maribeth Hercinger, PhD, RN, Associate Professor of Nursing, Creighton University College of Nursing As a passionate nursing educator who challenges students with realistic experiences, I have been teaching for 33 years. I am involved with curriculum development and assessment and have taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally, I have focused on NCLEX-RN preparation, safety and quality, and simulation experiences across the lifespan. I have been involved in simulation development and evaluation for over 10 years. As a member of the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (C-CEI©) team, we have developed, tested, and published studies validating this instrument as an innovative and effective instrument for simulation environments. The CCEI© is currently being tested for use in the clinical area. The CCEI© has been used around the country and around the world with translations in several languages. It has been used by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the National League for Nursing in simulation studies. As a faculty that believes in the effectiveness of peer learning and with a desire to engage students in the learning process, intraprofessional simulation development has challenged me to apply my expertise in curriculum, teaching learning strategies, and collaboration with nursing colleagues across undergraduate and graduate levels of education. Currently I am an ATI Champion for the Creighton College of Nursing. My current focus in this role is to improve our integration of the ATI products for student learning and remediation. In addition, an ATI testing and remediation policy is being developed.
